  • Abstract:

Any translation in whatever forms is subject to the target culture. On top of linguistic elements, a range of non-linguistic factors also exert certain influence on translation. Amongst all these factors, ideology is one of the most significant non-linguistic element that affects to a large extent translation and translated texts. Being one of the representatives of the Manipulation school, Andre Lefevere, in his book entitled The Translation, Rewriting and Manipulation of the Literary Reputation, proposes the idea that translation is manipulation by translators over the source texts, and explains systemically his manipulation theory, which means that translation is a form of rewriting and is manipulated by three factors: ideology, poetics and patronage. Any translation is subject to ideological effects, not least news translation (Chen Mingyao, 2001). The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is the largest national broadcasting organization in the UK and one of world’s largest broadcasters. China’s ever-rising international influence and expanding economy have drawn a great deal of attention of the international community, especially the Western world to its development and policies. To bear this out with one example, BBC has already opened a column peculiar to China’s political affairs. News translation of this kind contributes to deepening Chinese citizens’ understanding of the perspectives and viewpoints of major Western media, which plays a pivotal role in promoting mutual understanding between peoples from the East and West and bringing about closer intergovernmental ties (Liu Qizhong, 2009). The research has certain reference significance for translators, in particular, those of news translation. Meanwhile, it is also a real help to translation teaching.
