  • Abstract:

As a pivotal group in societal development, college students' mental health not only significantly impacts their personal growth but also profoundly influences social stability. To assist universities in formulating more targeted mental health education strategies, this study analyzes the spatio-temporal characteristics and underlying causes of college students' mental health from a big data perspective. First, we outline the concept of mental health, emphasizing that it encompasses a state of well-being in physical, psychological, and social adaptation. Measurement can be achieved through multidimensional tools such as self-report mental health scales and the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire. We comprehensively investigate college students' mental health status using literature review, questionnaire surveys, and big data analysis. Results reveal temporal fluctuations in mental health: lower levels at semester start, stability mid-term, sharp declines during exam weeks, and recovery before holidays. Spatially, students in eastern universities exhibit better mental health than those in central and western regions. The study also analyzed the causes of these mental health patterns. Among individual factors, introverted personality, negative coping strategies, and distorted self-perception are prone to trigger psychological issues. Family factors such as economic status and parenting styles also impact students' mental health. Academic pressure, teacher-student relationships, and campus divisions further affect students' psychological well-being. These findings assist universities in implementing targeted mental health education and interventions to promote students' psychological development.
